Job Overview
Fairview Health Services is looking for a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist for the Cell Therapy Laboratory in the area of Translational Product Development at University of Minnesota Medical Center. This is a fulltime position. The hours include Monday through Friday (weekends as needed); working 8:00AM-4:30PM. (8 hour shifts).
The UMMC Cell Therapy Laboratory is a cell engineering laboratory that provides hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and other hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cell types derived from a variety of sources [bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood (UCB) and various tissues] for hematopoietic reconstitution and novel somatic cellular therapies.The laboratory processes over 1000 cellular products, including 700 autologous, allogeneic-related and allogeneic-unrelated peripheral blood, UCB, bone marrow, and tissue products annually in support of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.
Accreditations: The UMMC Clinical Cell Therapy Laboratory is Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved and accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and AABB.
Responsibilities Technical Duties:
- Performs cell and tissue processing procedures necessary to prepare products for transplantation, adoptive immunotherapies and other somatic cell/tissue therapies. Processes include: positive and negative cell selection, mononuclear cell separation, cryopreservation, cell culture, vaccine preparation, cell activation and expansion, tissue engineering, cell transduction/modification and quality control testing.
- Ability to operate a variety of laboratory instrumentation including but not limited to: centrifuges, cell washers, various cell bioreactors, chemistry analyzers, mononuclear cell separator, cell selection devices, cell analyzer, microscopes, flow cytometer and liquid nitrogen controlled rate freezer.
- Perform database and cell processing entry using Access, Excel, commercial software systems and hospital lab systems.
- Perform analytical hematology,blood banking, flow cytometry, chemistry testing on cell products.
- Performing and prepare all documentation (SOPs, forms, etc...) for practice production runs, validation and clinical production
- Functions independently in performing all major work responsibilities of professional laboratory practice
- Completes specified maintenance on instruments.
Quality Control/Quality Assurance:
- Responsible for quality control monitoring for processes and equipment.
- Complies with all standard operation procedures and policies.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
- Takes appropriate action upon identifying abnormal, discrepant, or unexpected results. Directly communicates and documents abnormal and critical results.
- Recognizes and communicates values and trends that exceed the QC decision levels. Takes action to resolve and consults with supervisor as needed.

Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college/university in a related laboratory field including the related lab practicum or equivalent routes meeting qualifications as high complexity testing personnel as specified in CLIA '88.
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. • Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided. or
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry. • Transcript must be provided. or
- A transcript evaluation verifying equivalency to a U.S. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university. • Equivalency verification documentation must be provided. or
- Completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training course and a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology including one semester in microbiology and 16 semester hours in chemistry including one semester in organic or biochemistry. • Transcript must be provided. or
- Master's degree from an accredited college/university in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biology, cytology, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, allied health, medical laboratory science, or an appropriately related field. • Diploma with field of study listed or transcript must be provided.
- Applicant should possess or be eligible to receive appropriate Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved laboratory certification. • ASCP, ASCPi, or AMT - MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) or MT (Medical Technologist) within 1 Year or
- HEW Medical Technologist certification may be considered.
